There is never a live-action adaptation featuring the iconic pink car and fashionable outfits. Despite discussions about a live-action film for over a decade, it was only after Greta Gerwig signed on to this project. However, we do know that it’s going to be a unique take on the classic Barbie doll that we all know. Warner Bros released a synopsis after its second teaser. It gives us a little peek into the storyline of this film. According to this short synopsis, “Barbie land is a perfect place where everyone’s perfect…unless you’re Ken or have an existential crisis”. In a recent interview, the film’s lead stars shed some light on the premise. According to them, their goal is to give the audience something totally different from what they’re expecting. They want to surprise people and provoke thoughtful conversation while still honoring the brand and its fan base. Will Ferrell, who’s also in the film, has revealed some interesting details about it. He said that it’s a mix of high and low art, with a satirical commentary on male patriarchy and women in society. He plays the CEO of Mattel, who’s insensitive but weird. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling have been cast in the lead roles. Apart from them, the film will feature a wide range of talented actors. Each one will be portraying different variations of the iconic doll. Kate McKinnon will play Gymnast Barbie, while Emma Mackey will portray the Physicist version. Alexandra Shipp will be the Writer variant, and Sharon Rooney will play the Lawyer variant. Nicola Coughlan will take on the role of the Diplomat version, while Anna Cruz Kayne will be a Judge variant. Ritu Arya from The Umbrella Academy will be a journalist variant. But that’s not all. Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Dua Lipa will play the Mermaid version of Barbie, and Hari Nef will portray a Doctor variant. As for the Kens! Simu Liu will be one version of Ken, with Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and Scott Evans also taking on the role of different Kens. Other characters in the movie will include Ken’s best friend Allan, played by Michael Cera, and Barbie’s best friend Midge, played by Emerald Fennell. We’ll also see some human characters in the mix, with Will Ferrell as the CEO of a toy company, Connor Swindells as an intern at the company, and Jamie Demetriou as an employee.
