Hey there, Gladiator fans! Today, we have some exciting news for you. The long-awaited sequel to the classic movie directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe is finally happening! And guess who’s taking on the lead role? None other than rising star Paul Mescal! There was a bit of a delay in filming due to Paul’s busy schedule with theater work, but fear not, he’s ready to get his Roman fighter on. In an interview on the BAFTAs red carpet, Paul confirmed that he’ll be on set very soon, though he didn’t give an exact date. Despite the story seemingly coming to an end with Maximus’s death, rumors of a Gladiator sequel have been circulating for years. The courageous act Maximus displayed in front of Commodus must have deeply impacted Lucius. Paul Mescal will be playing an all-grown-up version of Lucius, and if the word “gladiator” remains as part of the title, we can imagine that Lucius will have really taken after Maximus and decided to enter the fighting pits rather than become Caesar. Joining Scott on the production team is David Scarpa, who previously worked with Scott as the screenwriter for All the Money in the World. In addition to Scott and Scarpa, other key members of the original Gladiator team are also returning for Gladiator 2, including production designer Arthur Max and costume designer Janty Yates.
