According to some reports, there will be six major battles featured in the film. Two of them are already confirmed and these are the Siege of Toulon and the Battle of Marengo.
The Siege of Toulon holds great significance as it marked one of Napoleon’s early triumphs as a young officer. It’s fascinating to see it portrayed on the big screen with Ridley behind the camera. On the other hand, the Battle of Marengo was a crucial engagement in the War of the Second Coalition. This battle fought in northern Italy, showcased Napoleon’s remarkable tactical skills as he defeated the Austrian army despite their surprise attack. It solidified his position as the leader of France following his coup a few months prior. To bring these historical battles to life, filming took place in various locations across England. The team captured scenes in Lincoln, Buckinghamshire, Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, and Boughton House in Kettering. Additionally, the production ventured to Malta, a beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea. In Malta, they utilized Fort Ricasoli, an actual fort that witnessed conflicts during Napoleon’s time. It will serve as the backdrop for the Siege of Toulon, adding authenticity and historical accuracy to the film. Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix takes on the titular role. Alongside him, we have Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine. Tahar Rahim joins the cast as Paul Barras. Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, and Youssef Kerkour are also cast in supporting roles. The movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 22, 2023.
