Shazam: Fury of the Gods │ New and Returning Cast │ News Update │ Cineflicks News

You remember the movie “Shazam!” from back in 2019, right? Well, if you loved it as much as we did, get ready to be excited because the sequel is almost here! And it’s called “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” In the first film, we saw Billy Batson become a superhero and fight against the evil Doctor Sivana. But now, he’s out in the world with his foster family, using the powers of literal gods to fight crime. However, things get complicated with the arrival of three Greek goddesses known as the Daughters of Atlas – Hespera, Kalypso, and Athena. So, who are these new characters, and what do DC comics say about them? Let’s check it out . . . Shazam 2 doesn’t feature many new characters but the ones we do get to see are definitely worth discussing.
First up, we have Hespera, played by the iconic Helen Mirren. She is the first daughter of the Atlas and an omnipotent entity known as a Titan who gave Shazam his stamina. While Hespera doesn’t have a comic book counterpart, she is inspired by a character from Greek mythology called Hesperides. Hesperides are nymphs, mythical spirits of nature who take the form of beautiful women. They’re known for protecting a garden with a golden apple tree, alternating between helping people who stumble upon this garden and manipulating them. In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Hespera is definitely a villain. Next up is Kalypso, played by Lucy Liu. Kalypso is another daughter of Atlas and, much like her older sister Hespera, she isn’t based on any pre-existing characters from DC Comics. Instead, she’s based on a pre-existing character from Greek mythology named Calypso. In Homer’s Odyssey, Calypso is a nymph and the child of Atlas who protects the island of Ogygia. In the movie, Kalypso is also a villain who grows giant vines in a stadium. Last but not least, we have Anthea, played by Rachel Zegler. Anthea is the youngest daughter of Atlas and, like her sisters, she’s not adapted from DC Comics but rather from Greek mythology. In the latter, she’s a princess of the Greek city Thespiae who has a son with Hercules. In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Anthea is not a mortal but rather a Titan. The first trailer also shows Anthea next to Grazer’s Freddy Freeman, both screaming at the dragon that’s coming toward them, so maybe she switches sides at some point in the film.
