While working on John Wick: Chapter 3 in 2017, Derek Kolstad and Chad Stahelski were also thinking of ideas for a prequel story. They realized that a TV series would be the perfect way to tell the story of the hotel that provides a safe haven for assassins in the film series. In June 2017, the series was officially confirmed to be in development and titled The Continental. Soon, Lionsgate gave the green light in 2018, for the project to air on its Starz network. Initially, Chad was set to direct the first episode and create an origin story for some of the characters from the film series. In April 2021, Lionsgate’s chairman of television, Kevin Beggs said that they wanted to make a show which would add to the world-building of the John Wick universe, without hindering any future films. Therefore, after hearing pitches from different creative teams, the studio settled on the approach presented by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons.
As for its storyline, the show is set in New York during the 1970s sanitation strike. It will explore a young Winston’s journey to becoming the steward of The Continental Hotel in New York. This means that there will be recasts for iconic characters due to the 40-year gap between the show and the films. The series is highly ambitious, aiming to deliver feature-quality action on television. The plot synopsis reveals that the series will delve into the origins of the hotel and the mysterious underworld it houses. Chad Stahelski, the director of all John Wick movies, has expressed his hopes for the show. In an interview, he said that he wants to prove to the TV world that you can have feature action on a TV show. The official plot synopsis for the series reads, “The three-part event will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins, centerpiece of the John Wick universe, through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City, to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne. Colin Woodell has been cast in the role of Winston. Alongside him, Ayomide Adegun is portraying the character of Charon, played by the late Lance Riddick in the film series. Mel Gibson is cast as Cormac but no details about his character have been revealed yet. The other supporting cast includes Jessica Allain as Lou, Mishel Prada as KD, Peter Greene as Uncle Charlie, and Ben Robson as Frankie. The format of the show is a three-episode event series, with each episode being 90 minutes long. These three episodes will be directed by Albert Hughes and Charlotte Brändström. It will feature the iconic action sequence of the John Wick franchise for which it has become famous.
The show is set to hit screens in September 2023 on Peacock! While the show was originally intended to air on Starz, it was recently announced that it will now be available exclusively on NBC Universal’s streaming service Peacock. The Continental will also be available to stream on Prime Video for those outside of the US.
