The Penguin │ HBO Max Series │ News Update │ Cineflicks News
“The Penguin” from Gotham City is getting his own series this year. After the huge critical and commercial success of the 2022 Batman film, HBO Max pitched an idea for a spin-off series from the movie. This idea came after the amazing performance of Collin Farrell in the role of this character. The widespread critical acclaim received by Collin is the main reason that we are going to watch him in this upcoming show. After the recent teaser was dropped, it become evident that the show will be dark, grittier, and violent, just like the titular character itself. But what can we expect from it and who is appearing in it? To find the answer to these questions, watch this video till the end.
At this point, the details of the plot are not revealed yet. Still, we do know that it will focus on the character Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, a.k.a “The Penguin”. The show is set in Gotham City, which is still reeling from the events of the film, where The Riddler flooded the city. This provides Oswald with the perfect opportunity to take control of the ruins and become a major player in the city’s hierarchy. Matt Reeves, the director of the Batman film, has always been a big fan of the DC comics. When it comes to the storyline, he prefers for sticking closely to the source material. This means that the show will likely draw from existing comic book stories, to some extent. According to HBO’s Sarah Aubrey, the aim of this spin-off series is to depict the life of Oswald in Gotham City, where he tries to climb the ladder of power using his skills as a hustler and strategist. The show will have eight episodes, which will allow for more in-depth character development and introduce new storylines and characters. The best thing is that Matt won’t have to worry about connecting the show’s storyline, to any other DC universe. In that way, he’ll have more creative freedom to craft his own stories. We don’t know yet whether he will be directing any episodes, but he is providing guidance on the structure of the scripts and is involved in choosing who will direct the episodes. After James Gun took over the DC Studios as co-chairman and co-CEO, fans were speculating about the future of this show and others. Fortunately, it turns out that Matt s’ Batman film, as well as all related spin-offs like this one, will exist in a separate section of the DCU called ‘Elseworlds’. This means that there won’t be any existing DCU characters appearing in these movies. It also puts an end to all the speculation about crossovers with Joker, Justice League, or any other DC properties linked to Gotham City. In other words, this is a completely different project with its own storyline, and completely separate from the rest of the DCU. There are rumors that Robert’s Batman may make an appearance in the show, although there isn’t any official confirmation yet. This will likely happen because, it would help connect The Penguin’s story to the Dark Knight’s storyline. However, since nothing has been officially confirmed yet, it’s possible that Robert’s appearance will be kept as a surprise for viewers. Now let’s discuss the creative team behind this project. You will be pleased to know that it’s in good hands, with Reeves and Dylan Clark serving as executive producers. Lauren LeFranc, is acting as the creator, showrunner, and writer of the series. Recently, it was announced that Craig Zobel, director of the hit show “Mare of Easttown”, will be helming the first two episodes of it. This is great news for fans who are looking forward to seeing the dark and gritty style that made the movie such a success. Colin Farrell is set to reprise his role as the titular character. Apart from him, Cristin Milioti will play Sofia Falcone, the daughter of the previous leader of Gotham’s criminal underworld. It’s unclear how her character will be portrayed, but if she’s anything like her father, she could pose a real threat to Oswald’s plans. Michael Kelly, Deirdre O’Connell, and RhenzyFeliz have also been cast in the series, although their roles are unknown at this point. Matt hasn’t revealed which comic books or stories he’s drawing inspiration from. That’s why, we can only speculate which classic DC characters might make appearances in the show. The Penguin is all set to arrive on our screens at the start of 2024. For more updates, subscribe to the Cineflicks News.
