South Korean thrillers have a unique style that sets them apart from other countries’ cinemas. From “I Saw the Devil” which changed the game in 2010 to “The Wailing” which captivated audiences with its exceptional storytelling in 2016, these movies have a reputation for being top-notch. Most South Korean thrillers are crime and horror-based, but this movie is different. After Jung-E which was a mild hit, Netflix is bringing us another thrilling original movie, which is “Unlocked”. This film is based on the 2017 novel “Sumaho o Otoshita dake” by Akira Shiga, which was also the inspiration behind the Japanese film “Stolen Identity”. Although the Japanese adaptation didn’t quite hit the mark, Netflix is known for its successful Korean adaptations. Unlocked follows Nami, a girl in marketing professional trying to make a name for herself at a startup company. On her way home from work, she loses her smartphone, but a man named Jun Yeong finds it and returns it to her. However, when she gets her phone back, she realizes that it’s fixed even though it was previously broken, which raises a few red flags for her. Jun Yeong has taken advantage of the spyware on Nami’s smartphone. He used it to track her every move, from her location to her social network. Meanwhile, a detective named Ji Man, who also happens to be Jun Yeong’s father, discovers that his son may be connected to a murder case. As Ji Man works to uncover the truth, Nami’s life becomes threatened by the very person who has been monitoring her every move. All because she lost her phone, she finds herself caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Most South Korean thrillers are crime and horror-based, but “Unlocked” is different. It tackles the idea of an internet stalker who can track someone’s every move without physically following them. The stalker knows all of their secrets, hobbies, and even their darkest thoughts. The character of Nami is played by Chun Woo Hee. She is known for her work in films like Rustle, The Beauty Inside, and Anchor. Yim Si Wan portrayed the character of Jun Yeong, the main villain of this film. The supporting cast includes Kim Ye Won, Park Ho San, Jeon Jin Oh, Kim Joo Ryoung, and Lee Jae Woo. The film is written and directed by Kim Tae-joon, in his directional debut. Unlocked will be released worldwide on Netflix on February 17, 2023.
